MARMORA AND LAKE – Paul Labonte still remembers the day he bought his first piece of fishing tackle. The Ottawa resident and long-time collector recalls stumbling upon an old fishing tackle book for sale in his local mall that immediately peaked his interest. “A few days later, I bought my first piece,” he says. That was twenty years ago.
Since that time, Labonte’s interest has grown into a vast collection of antique fishing equipment that fills the basement of his home. He has pieces dating back as far as 1890 and recalls a time when eastern Ontario was home to several small businesses that produced and sold tackle. “Havelock had three or four tackle companies around the 1960s, up until bigger companies started selling tackle cheaper,” he says. “A lot of the employees that worked there are still alive and interested in tackle.”
The area’s rich history prompted Labonte to bring his annual antique tackle and sporting goods show and sale to Marmora. This is Labonte’s third year hosting the event. His first two were held in Perth. The one-day show will be held at the Marmora Legion May 3 from 9 a.m. To 2 p.m. Labonte says there’s no charge for admission – he simply hopes to bring collectors out of the woodwork and through the doors. While his antique tackle collection will be the main focus, Labonte will also have other collectable items at the show including duck decoys, sporting equipment, books and sports cards.
